Find help in your language

Intashyo is an iPhone app for immigrant and refugee families. Take a photo of a letter and learn what it says and what to do. Find real help near you. Ask questions and hear the answers. All in Kinyarwanda, French, Swahili or English.

The app explains a letter in one short card: what it is, the main point, three steps to do, the deadline, the case number, and a local office to call for help.

Scan a letter

Understand your mail

A letter from USCIS, a landlord, a school or a clinic can be hard to read. Intashyo helps.

  1. Take a photo of the letter.
  2. Read one short card in your language: what the letter is, what you need to do and by when, key details like a case number, and who can help near you when there is a good match.
  3. Listen or ask. Tap Listen to hear the card read out loud. Type or say a question about the letter.

Watch out for scams. Intashyo is designed to warn you when a letter looks like a scam, for example one that asks for gift cards or says you will be arrested unless you pay right away.

The photo stays on your phone. Your iPhone reads the words itself. Only the words are sent to be explained, never the photo. When you close the screen, the letter is gone from the app.

This is a computer reading, and it can make mistakes. For court, immigration, legal or medical papers, also talk to a person.

The Scan a letter screen, with buttons to scan with the camera or choose a photo, and a note that the photo stays on your phone.

Local help

Find real help near you

Intashyo lists real organizations that help with housing, food, health care, English classes, legal aid, jobs, documents, family services, getting around, and money and taxes.

In Kentucky, you get verified local listings for Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Owensboro, Northern Kentucky, and Elizabethtown / Fort Knox, plus programs for the whole state. Anywhere else in the US, you get a national list of programs and hotlines that work everywhere.

  • Most listings have a button to call and a button for directions.
  • Save the places you need.
  • The list works without internet.
The Resources screen: help sorted by need, such as Housing, Food and SNAP, Healthcare, English and Classes, Legal Aid, Jobs and Documents.
Housing help near you in Louisville: each organization has its address and buttons to call, get directions or save it.

AI chat and voice

Ask a question. Type it or say it.

Ask everyday questions in your own words: how to get a Social Security card, where to apply for food stamps, how to sign up your children for school. The assistant answers in your language. For local phone numbers and addresses, it uses the Intashyo directory.

Prefer to talk? Every text box has a microphone. In the chat, you can ask out loud and hear the answer.

Answers come from AI (Google Gemini). They can be wrong, and they are not legal or medical advice. Check important things with a professional or an official office.

The AI chat answers “How do I get my Social Security card?” with five simple steps and the phone number of a local community center.

Emergency

Emergency numbers, always free

The Emergency screen calls 911 with one tap. It also lists lines you can reach 24/7: the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, the Crisis Text Line, Poison Control, the Domestic Violence Hotline, and 211 for food and local help. In Kentucky, it also shows the nearest 24/7 emergency room.

In danger right now? Call 911.

The Emergency screen: a large button to call or text 911, then the Crisis Text Line, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, the nearest hospital, Poison Control and the Domestic Violence Hotline.

Four languages

Made for your language

For organizations

Do you help immigrant and refugee families?

Resettlement agencies, clinics, schools, libraries, churches and community groups: we would like to hear from you. Intashyo points families to people like you. It does not replace caseworkers or lawyers.

  • Is your organization missing, or is a phone number or address out of date? Tell us and we will look into it.
  • Want to see how Intashyo could help the families you serve? We are happy to show you.
